HR can get a bad rap. We’ve been called Compliance Cops, the Terminators, and the list gets worse from there. I just saw an article that said if HR was in a fairytale, we’d be the wicked stepmother! How harsh. Why does HR get a bad rap? Do we continue to hire unimpressive talent, do we not focus on onboarding and prioritize learning, or are we not innovative and strategic?

You may answer yes to all of the above. If not, and you have a high functioning HR team at your organization, please reach out to me, as I’d love to hear what’s making your team tick. If you don’t, how can you transform that image?

A few ideas that can immediately change the dynamics between HR, leadership, and the entire workforce.

  1. Get organized, compliant, and utilize technology to get there.
  2. Train your managers – they are an extension of the HR team. They need your knowledge and expertise to retain and engage your staff.
  3. Treat everyone fairly – review job descriptions, compensation scales, and be transparent.
  4. Create career paths for your employees so they see a future at the organization.
  5. Allow empathy in the workplace – a team member is struggling, ask why, and have programs set up to help.

If you are in leadership and your HR department needs to move from tasks to strategy and be HUMAN again– give them the resources to get there. If you need guidance, reach out to Purple Ink and let us assess your team, implement procedures or new software, train your staff, or just talk about what needs addressed first. Let’s not be the wicked stepmother any longer!
