In our June 2022 free webinar, Purple Ink Consultant Dr. Misty Resendez and Intern Gabi Ruderman discussed the importance of personal pronoun identity in diversity and inclusion efforts.

Personal and gender pronouns are the pronouns that a person identifies with and would like to be called. Using the right name and pronouns shows that you respect a person’s identity.

This presentation will discuss the importance of learning why personal pronoun identity is an issue of growing importance in diversity and inclusion efforts. You will learn best practice strategies to help direct your organization in this area. During this presentation you will learn what to do if you make a mistake with pronouns or names.

The subject of gender identity, including transgender and non-binary identities is evolving and may be new to some people. But the basics of respect for human dignity are the same and they go both ways: Respect for different gender identities and respect for people who are learning and trying to understand.

Presenter Bios:

Dr. Misty Resendez is a consultant with Purple Ink. She is passionate about DEI and women’s leadership.

Misty has over 15 years of professional experience in human resources, business administration and leadership methodologies. She has practiced in for-profit and non-profit arenas holding both clinical and management roles, allowing her to utilize her expertise coaching and mentoring leaders to increase organizational performance. Her experience enables her to strongly grasp the interworking of people and the organization to positively affect talent acquisition, cultural diversity and inclusion, organizational change, and leadership development. Misty earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Indiana University. She earned a master’s degree in Management and a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University. She is an Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Certified Administrator and an Organizational Culture Inventory (OCI) Certified Administrator. Misty is a Board Member of Diversity Roundtable of Central Indiana and a member of SHRM, the International Leadership Association, and the Women’s Leadership Affinity Group.

Gabi Ruderman is an Intern with Purple Ink. They are passionate about DEI research and education.

Gabi is a student going into their last year at Purdue University, where they are majoring in Sociology and PR/Strategic Communication. They interned with United Way of Greater Lafayette for the Summer of 2021, where they created and compiled training materials over a broad variety of diversity, equity, and inclusion-related topics. Gabi has worked as a Research Assistant for projects focused on stereotyping and bias in hiring against members of the LGBTQ+ community. Beyond formal experience, they have led projects and presentations focused on equity and participated in panel presentations for SafeZone and Trans Inclusion training through Purdue’s LGBTQ center.
