4 Ways to Make Your Workplace More Flexible
Flexible work practices aren’t just good for the employees; they benefit the employer as well. Organizations that offer flexibility have lower absenteeism and turnover and higher engagement and productivity. Flexibility also helps with attracting and retaining top talent.
Ready to make your workplace more flexible? These are some initiatives that have worked for Purple Ink.
Flextime
For most roles, what matters is that you’re getting your work done—not what time you’re doing it. At Purple Ink, we’re responsible for completing a minimum number of hours per week, but we have no set schedule. As long as employees aren’t falling behind or creating communication issues with clients and coworkers, they’re not required to work the traditional five days per week, 8 am to 5 pm timetable.
That means, for example, employees can:
- Take off in the middle of the day to go to appointments, pick up kids from school, etc.
- Condense their hours into four days instead of five
- Start their day later if they’re not “morning people”
Remote Work
Purple Ink’s entire team works remotely. In recent studies, remote workers reported:
- Higher productivity
- Improved work-life balance
- Disinterest in applying for jobs without remote options
Worried about your team becoming disconnected? Purple Ink uses tools like Teams and Zoom to keep in touch and does strategic planning together at annual in-person company retreats.
Flexibility for Families
Your team members’ family lives can have a significant impact on their work lives. Make sure your employees know you care about them as more than just a contributor to the company’s bottom line! Offer leave not only for women giving birth, but for spouses/partners and adoptive parents as well. And of course, flexible hours and remote work help accommodate family needs, whether that’s working from home to keep an eye on the kids or popping out to take them to an appointment during the workday.
Considering Employees’ Needs
You may not think of everything. Encourage employees to talk to you about their needs as they arise and be willing to work with them on a solution that works for both of you. Employees that feel trusted and supported will stay with you longer.
