Understanding Your Emotional Intelligence

Understanding Your Emotional Intelligence

A study examining top performers across various fields found that emotional intelligence was twice as important as cognitive abilities in predicting exceptional performance. This shows that, despite sometimes being seen as “soft” or “fluffy,” emotional intelligence can have a powerful impact in the workplace.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions in oneself. We can’t truly manage others’ emotions, but our reactions to them can help us navigate challenges.

Improving Your EQ

Your personality is generally set by the age of six, and IQ is set around age four to six, but your emotional intelligence can change. It can even be affected by what’s going on in your life; you may be less confident if you just started a new job, or struggle with interpersonal relationships after moving to a new area where you don’t know anyone.

There’s no one-size-fits all strategy for raising your emotional intelligence, since it’s highly personal and subject to change based on your situation. A good place to start, though, is to take the EQ-i 2.0® assessment so you understand where you’re falling short or out of balance.

About the EQ Assessment

The EQ-i 2.0® is an assessment that must be administered by a coach who’s trained to walk through the report with you, ensuring accurate, ethical, and meaningful feedback. The assessment gives you a snapshot of where you are today regarding five main skills: self-perception, self-expression, interpersonal, decision-making, and stress management. For each main skill, there are three subskills that help you get a better understanding of what you’re feeling.

When all the skills are in balance, you have a higher level of emotional and social function – and even well-being and performance. Knowing where you are now can help you create a roadmap for reaching your full potential!
