Everything You Need to Know About Employee Well-Being
Supporting your employees’ well-being isn’t just good for them; it also benefits your organization. Well-being initiatives can increase productivity and engagement, decrease absenteeism, and help you attract and retain top talent.

Wellness Programs
Creating a wellness program can increase productivity, build a sense of community, and make employees feel valued. Workplace wellness programs can start small, with something like a simple walking program, and grow into an all-inclusive activity tracking, health risk premium reduction program. You can fit the program to meet the needs of your culture!
Make sure you’re putting in the work to make your wellness program a success. Start by finding out what’s important to your workforce through surveys or focus groups. It’s important that your culture supports the program, so encourage leadership to champion and get involved in the program. Communication is key; you need to convince employees to take action.

Mental Health
Employees’ mental health has a significant impact on your workplace. When employees struggle with mental health issues, they may experience reduced productivity, increased absenteeism, and decreased job satisfaction. For employers, mental health issues can result in increased healthcare costs and higher turnover. Employees are looking for employers who support their mental health, particularly younger generations, who expect mental health support rather than seeing it as a nice perk.
To support employees’ mental health, start by creating a supportive culture by promoting open communication about mental health struggles and providing resources. You might also offer training to help employees understand and respond to mental health issues, like the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) program. Educating your team and sharing your own struggles can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.
Promote work-life balance by offering flexible work arrangements and remote work options where possible and by encouraging employees to take breaks and use all their paid time off. Provide mental health resources like employee assistance programs (EAPs), counseling services, and mental health screenings.

Financial Wellness
Financial stress affects employees’ well-being, job satisfaction, and engagement and costs businesses an estimated $183 billion in productivity each year (SHRM). Employers can help employees with these challenges through financial wellness initiatives. This may include access to financial advisors, budgeting tools, financial courses, and more.
Social Connection
Social wellness is an often-overlooked aspect of employee well-being. Fostering connections and cultivating strong relationships improves employee engagement and retention and creates more cohesive and effective teams.
To support employees’ social well-being, consider offering team bonding and team building activities. Start team meetings by checking in on employees’ lives and encouraging team members to share celebrations with the group, whether it’s a work win or something exciting happening in their personal lives.
Training programs can be a game-changer in this area. Assessments like CliftonStrengths® and DiSC® can give teams a deeper understanding of each other and how they can work better together. Topics like belonging, delivering feedback, emotional intelligence, and empathy can help teammates communicate better with each other and create a sense of inclusion.
