Building a Strong Employer Brand from First Impression to Hire

Written by Anna Park

The candidate experience shapes every employee’s journey and has a lasting impact on your employer brand, hiring outcomes, and overall business performance. To attract top talent, prioritize making every step of the employee journey positive and memorable. A great candidate experience not only strengthens your employer brand but also encourages referrals for future recruiting needs.

Employer Brand and Influence

Remember, candidates are evaluating your company just as much as you are assessing them. Every interaction during the hiring process serves as a reflection of your organization. HR leaders should focus on clear, consistent communication and ensure each touchpoint is meaningful. As John Wilson wisely noted for SHRM, “companies forget that the candidate experience should be treated like a consumer experience.” Think about it: if you ordered from a company and never heard back, would you ever buy from them again or recommend them to your friends?

Candidates often engage with your employer brand before you even initially connect. They might check Glassdoor or Google reviews, hear from friends, or see LinkedIn posts about your company. A strong employer brand is essential for attracting the talent you want. Negative application experiences shared online can deter potential candidates. Monitor those comments and reviews; engage when you can to maintain a strong online presence. Encourage your team members to share positive stories as well. Sharing authentic messages can engage candidates and spark their interest in your organization.

Human Resources can enhance your employer brand by highlighting your people. Identify brand champions within your team, share their stories, and create a referral program to connect top talent to your organization. Ensure that your employee value proposition and messaging are consistently aligned with the core mission of your organization, fostering a clear connection to team success. As Purple Ink puts it, the question isn’t just “why work for this company,” but “why choose this company over another?”

Interview Process: Timeliness and Feedback

You’ve locked in top talent, secured their application, and initiated communication with them. Now what? Streamline your process as much as possible. Have the red carpet ready to roll out for interviews and be prepared to welcome interviewees and new hires.

I recently was chatting with a friend who has been job hunting. She applied for a role she was excited about and began the interview process. This exciting role quickly turned into four interviews and months spent waiting to know the final decision about the role. At one interview, she showed up and was met by a panel of people, when she had been preparing to meet with just one person! The interviews were repetitive and lengthy. While she might still move forward with the role, this experience gave her pause. It didn’t feel organized, and her time did not feel valued. Not only was the interview process lengthy, but there was a lack of thoughtfulness in the experience.

There are a few ways to make this process smoother and give candidates a better experience. Before you set up interviews, look at your current process and cut out any unnecessary steps. If several team members want to join the interviews, try organizing a panel instead of lots of separate sessions. Make sure candidates know what to expect by giving them a straightforward timeline and let them know if anything changes. Ensure consistency throughout the selection process for all candidates by preparing interview guides and well-defined rubrics in advance.

When you’re unsure if your recent searches are working well, try asking new employees for feedback of the interview process. Their input can help you make changes that suit your organization better.

The Role of AI

AI tools are transforming recruitment, but the human touch remains vital. According to SHRM, many candidates now complete the entire hiring process without interacting with a real person. While you may not contact every candidate, personalizing emails with your name and contact information and manually reviewing applications add a thoughtful touch beyond automated screening. Remember that AI can be a helpful tool, though. Utilizing technology alongside thoughtful communication creates an organized and welcoming candidate experience, reinforcing your employer brand and building connections with your candidates.

What’s next?

Improving candidate experience is an ongoing commitment. By focusing on clear communication, using technology wisely, and staying transparent, you can build positive relationships with potential hires and strengthen your talent pipeline.
