From “First Date” to “Happily Ever After”: How to Attract and Keep the Best Talent

If an organization looks great on the outside, is fiscally fit, and is branded attractively, applicants will want to get to know it better. From the moment they see your job ad, they’re sizing up your company—every interaction either whispers “Ooh, I like that” or “Oh no, not cool.”

Recruitment isn’t just a transaction. It’s a relationship. Like dating, the goal is to move from that first spark of interest to long-term commitment. And even after you “tie the knot” with a new hire, they still need to feel the love.

Create an Irresistible Careers Page

Your website is your company’s home base—and your careers page should be one of its most compelling features. Google indexes job postings directly from websites, and many candidates use Google Jobs to search. If your jobs aren’t on your site, they’re likely invisible.

Your careers page should:

  • Make a visual impact with professional photos of employees and the workspace.
  • Add meaningful content that wows potential hires.
  • Highlight unique benefits such as paid volunteer time off (VTO), green practices, wellness initiatives, or flexible schedules.
  • Showcase your corporate social responsibility programs.
  • Feature team culture authentically. Younger generations especially want to know what it’s like to work with you day to day.

One of the best ways to do this? Short, authentic employee videos. Ask team members to casually share what they love about working at your company, what surprised them, or advice for new hires. These clips are more engaging than dated group photos and aren’t tied to specific events, so they stay relevant longer. Also, keep your content fresh. Stale photos or outdated highlights can give the impression your company is stuck in the past.

Tell a story that makes top talent want to be part of it.

Just make sure to get releases from employees before using their likeness in your marketing. This protects your company if an employee leaves or later requests their image be removed.

Write Job Ads That Attract and Job Descriptions That Deliver

Your job ad is often the first impression a candidate has of your company—think of it as your professional dating profile. A bland, generic posting signals a bland, uninspired workplace, and that’s a quick way to lose top talent before they even hit “apply.” Instead of rattling off a list of dry duties and vague qualifications, tell a story. Show how this role challenges, grows, and empowers the person who steps into it. Make them feel needed, valued, and excited to contribute.

That doesn’t mean you should be gimmicky. Professionalism matters. But adding clarity, energy, and a sense of purpose can make your job postings stand out in a crowded market. People are drawn to work that matters—and your ad should make that crystal clear.

But while inspiration gets candidates in the door, a strong job description keeps everything on track. A well-written job description sets clear performance expectations, supports fair compensation, aids in compliance (like ADA requirements), and forms the foundation for effective performance management.

At minimum, every job description should include:

  1. Essential Functions – What the job really requires, including frequency.
  2. Work Environment & Physical Demands – Be detailed for compliance and clarity.
  3. Position Classification – Is it exempt or non-exempt under wage laws?
  4. Position Requirements – Skills, education, experience, certifications.
  5. Duties Disclaimer – Roles evolve—make sure your description reflects that.
  6. Signatures – Acknowledgement from both employee and supervisor.

When you combine a compelling job ad with a solid, compliant job description, you not only attract great candidates—you set them (and your company) up for long-term success.

Get Creative with Advertising

Paid advertising can also help you reach specialized or hard-to-find talent pools. For example, help clients recruit skilled workers from Puerto Rico using targeted ads in Spanish on YouTube and Facebook—something traditional job boards can’t match.

Just remember to follow fair hiring laws when setting your ad parameters. Avoid targeting by age, gender, or other protected categories. Instead, focus on geography, skills, or interests.

Paid ads are especially effective for niche roles where talent is scarce. For more common positions, such as administrative roles, ads may be less cost-effective.

Simplify the Application Process

A 2023 study by Appcast found that 62% of job applications were completed on mobile devices. If your application process is long and clunky, you’re losing candidates before they hit “submit.”

Keep it simple:

  • Resume – Required
  • Salary Desired – Required
  • Cover Letter – Optional

Long forms, redundant questions, or outdated platforms make you look behind the times. The easier it is for candidates to apply, the better your applicant pool will be.

Ensure a Positive Interview Experience

Remember, every candidate—hired or not—can become a brand ambassador for your company based on how you treat them. Even if you ultimately reject someone, they should leave thinking, “I’d still love to work there someday.”

Some ways to create a positive experience:

  • Train interviewers to be warm, enthusiastic, and consistent.
  • Streamline your process; don’t drag it out. The best candidates are snapped up quickly.
  • Communicate proactively with applicants so they’re never left hanging. Even a simple, “Feel free to check back with me in two weeks if you haven’t heard from me” sets clear expectations.
  • Use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to stay organized and responsive. Even a basic ATS integrated with your website can help track candidates, rate applications, and ensure timely follow-ups.

Overselling a role or misrepresenting your culture may fill the position faster, but it sets the stage for disappointment and turnover.

Instead, focus on realistic job previews. Ask culture-based questions that reflect your mission, vision, and values. This helps you gauge fit while giving candidates a clearer picture of what to expect.

From your careers page to your interview process, every touchpoint sends a message about who you are as an employer. If you make candidates feel valued, informed, and inspired, you’ll attract not just applicants, but future ambassadors for your brand.
