Recently, I had my 90-day review in my new role here at Purple Ink, and it’s surreal to think that it’s been so long and, somehow, not long enough! After reflecting on my own experience as a candidate, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we can make this whole process better for everyone involved.
As a recruiter who just went through a job search myself, I totally relate to so many of the struggles I see on LinkedIn—endless applications, radio silence from roles you were super excited about, or getting all the way to the final interview only to be rejected. Job searching is a rollercoaster, and it really forces you to reflect on yourself, your goals, and even whether you might need to change career paths.
On the other side, I also see posts from recruiters frustrated by candidates who ghost, miss interviews, or back out during the offer process. As a recruiter, I’ve experienced these challenges, too. I often catch myself replaying interviews, wondering if I missed a red flag, could have communicated more clearly, or done a better job selling the experience.
Here are a few things that stood out to me from my own recent experience as a candidate and my ongoing role in recruiting and talent development.
Treat others like people, not numbers
As a candidate, be respectful of the team’s time. If you can’t make an interview, be honest about it. Did you land another job? Let me know! I’ll celebrate with you! Life happens, we get it! I would always rather reschedule than have you no-show.
As a recruiter, if something a candidate says sticks with you, let them know! When I was interviewing, one team member asked about my dog (yes, my dog!). They even asked for a picture, it’s the little things like that, those personal touches, that build genuine connection and helped me feel confident about moving forward with the company.
Keep communication open
As a recruiter, if things are moving slower than expected, don’t leave your top candidates hanging. A quick email or phone call can keep them engaged and invested in the opportunity.
As a candidate, I know it can be nerve-wracking to follow up, especially if you’re not sure if you’re bothering someone. But trust me, an email checking in and reaffirming your interest in the role and company can keep you front of mind—and show your professionalism!
Close the loops
Timely communication is everything! Recently, I received an email from a role I applied for about eight months ago, just to let me know the position had been filled. As recruiters, we must do a better job of keeping candidates informed! Using your ATS to its full potential—through candidate dispositioning, email templates, and reminders—can help make sure no one is left wondering “What happened?”. Time spent prioritizing candidate experience is never a waste; it could be the reason that a 5-star candidate stays connected to you and fills a position in the future!
